U14 Week 8
Handball!
-
✅TEAMWORK
Work together to get the ball up the field!
✅AWARENESS
What’s your next move? As a teammate can you find an open space?
✅COMMUNICATE
Ask for the ball, encourage, tell your teammate to help you out!
-
✅20 x 35 yd playing area
✅Pinnies for both teams
✅3 yd wide end zone marked by cones
✅ No ball!
-
Handball is a hands-only game developing the concept of passing and moving
ATTACKERS
✅Players throw to each other, to advance the ball to an end zone to score
✅Players CANNOT run with the ball. The ball is advanced by supporting players moving into positions down the field
DEFENDERS
✅The defending team can only block, but not steal. If the ball comes loose, they can retrieve and start an attack
✅Progression can be made by playing soccer and using their feet.
💡TIP - Don’t stay too long on the ball or DEFENDERS can easily block and win it back
Teammates should move into a position to get the ball forward.
In TRANSITION (defenders get the ball) can they quickly catch the opposition off-guard with quick movement
-
✅ 3-second limit to the player with the ball
✅Restrict the amount of passes to get the ball to the end zone
-
Using throwing and catching makes it easier for understand the concept of passing and moving on the field in a game.
At this age, individual skill is more important to develop, but introducing the concepts of awareness, moving into a space to support teammates is good to practice, as in a real game
3v3 Game
-
✅HAVE FUN!
It’s an opportunity to play the game, explore skills, and work with teammates
✅ATTACK & DEFEND!
You will have lots of opportunities in a small-sided game to get touches and attack and defend
✅TEAMWORK
Work together to get the most success
-
✅Set up fields of 15x20yds
✅Teams of 3 (if there is an odd number, make a team of 4)
✅Each game lasts 5-7 minutes
✅1 x ⚽ per game
✅2 x mini goal 🥅 or cone goal per game
-
No need to over-coach. Let them play and let the game flow.
All the rules of the game should be used. Free kicks, throw-ins, goal kicks, and corner kicks. Restart the game after a goal with a kick-off.
💡TIP - You can start to give players empowerment and responsibility by allowing them to referee their own game. This will help them understand the rules.
💡TIP - Turn the 3v3 games into a mini-tournament to end the season. Make it fun by adding parents to the game!
-
✅ Make the field larger or smaller
✅ Ensure teams are even skilled - if there is a weaker team, give them an extra player
-
3v3 is perfect to show all moments of the game in a situation where all players get lots of action, which is important.
